Poll: Coastal residents won't evacuate

an interesting article that states that only one in three people polled within 20 miles of the coast would evacuate during a hurricane warning...

I wonder what these numbers looked like before Katrina

Hey Pete, I live within 5 miles of the Atlantic Ocean. When four hurricanes hit the state of Florida in 2004, three of them came from the gulf side and swept across the state from west to east, going out to sea eventually. Of those three that had a direct affect on the area I live in, we stayed in our manufactured home for the first one (Charley) left for the second one (Frances) and stayed for the third (Jean). Charley was the first direct hit our area had taken from a hurricane in 40 years. Would we stay again? Probably. Why? because there are no shelters in our area that take pets, and we have two small dogs that we will not leave behind. The one storm that we did evacuate for, we ended up going all the way to Chattanooga, a nightmare of a trip, to find a hotel that would let us have our pets with us. Since then, the owner of the park that we live in has built us a 5 million dollar clubhouse that has been built to withstand 155 mile per hour winds. So that makes our decision much easier.

I was a little surprised by the numbers at the beginning of the article, but began to understand the reasoning as I read further...I am still unsure why the numbers are so low though when taken in conjunction with the number of people that feel that they are prepared...

I think the % that think they are prepared is way off. People down here think they are prepared if they have some water, some food, and a place to go if need be. Most people who live in regular homes don't feel the need to evacuate at all. Those in manufactured homes usually will leave, especially if they are in an older home. Those of us who live in newer homes believe they are as safe as some of the older stick built homes.

I agree.
You should ask Chris what my basement looks like and I am not in one of the traditional "Danger zones"

People should have enough supplies for a minimum of a week if not longer.

Simply put if something does happen it may take a week before someone can get to you and provide aid...Katrina was a perfect example. What was it 5 days in some areas???

What makes people act the way they do?

With all the recalls associated with Chinese products, do you look at the label now to see where a product is made?

NEW POLL: What percentage of baseball players were taking steriods, HGH or other enhancing drugs (like amphetamines) before the rules changes instituted by MLB?

Which would you prefer?

You're at the Final table of the WSOP. You get dealt 2 Aces. What do you do?
