Police: Man beheads tame hotel duck

to me "Behead" implies that some sort of weapon was used...

Not so!

this ass RIPPED the ducks head off during a drinking binge.

Some people suck!

Cheney mulled Israeli strike on Iran: Newsweek

This administration is screwed up!!!

Cheney wanted the Israelis to strike Iran...so that Iran would retaliate and then the US could in turn fire on Iran...

If you need to worry about the opinion polls when going to war then don't do it...

If you need to go to war, then to hell with public opinion and do it. Go in and get the job done, kill who you have to kill and never put your own soldiers/people at risk over political agendas...if you can't live with that never pull the trigger.

I'd like to see a president or vice president with a 20 year old kid and a draft (that isn't fixed)...then we would see some different policy.

DOPES!

Neptune discovered 161 years ago today

In case you had any nagging questions about Neptune...here you go!

Lexus LS Hybrid...

So, now I am going to add another category of posts...LYING COMPANIES...this goes right up there with Dumb-Ass Celebrities

I am watching TV and I see a commercial for the new 2008 Lexus LS Hybrid...the first thing they say is 438 horsepower...

I sit back and actually watch a commercial...that's pretty impressive. The one drawback about hybrids that everyone always talks about is the power...could they have solved the problem?????

So...Lexus proceeds to take 30 seconds of my life plus another 5 minutes on the internet to look up the vehicle.

Well, this piece of crap does have 438 horsepower...300+ for the gas engine and 100+ for the electric...both engines don't work at the same time!!!

LIARS.

If a company can lie this much in a 30 second commercial, imagine what they will do when they really have time.

I have just excluded Lexus from my buying plans!

Eleven Iraqis arrested over killing of tribal chief

Kill American Soldiers, Women and Children...NO PROBLEM

Kill and Iraqi politician and people finally get arrested.

Dopes...

Giants won't bring Bonds back in 2008

Interesting call....

I wonder where he ends up...but I can't imagine him remaining in the National League...I am sure a DH spot will open up for him somewhere...

Somewhere that wants to see 3000 hits and the final HR for the record???

Hopefully it won't be the Yankees...they already sell out every night and will do so again next year as the final year in the "Stadium" comes about.

'Hobbit' wrists 'were primitive'

More evidence to suggest that the "Hobbits" found in Indonesia are a distinct race from Homo Sapiens...

Very cool.

More and more mythology gets proven to be in some basis of fact every day...

Maybe giants next????

NASA probe may have found Martian caves

Very cool.

Implications of this can shape our next missions to Mars (manned and unmanned).

Bush: Kids' health care will get vetoed

The people have clearly voted over the years that federalized healthcare is not wanted...so why try and "Back-door" the policies...

Just because it doesn't happen in one bill doesn't mean it won't happen.

Who will pay for this??? The Middle class through unfunded mandates that flow from the Federal to the State to the local municipality...

While I think health care is a necessity...I can't afford more of the tab...

Iran warns West against attack

What a mess...these people are nuts.

In some ways I can't wait for the oil to run out...Then we can leave this part of the world to it's insignificance...

Fashion chain Zara withdraws swastika handbag

Wow...and in a quality control "Oops" on the order of Mattel...Indian made bags sold at the store had swastikas all over the bags...

In defense of Zara (excluding incompetence and stupidity)...the swastika in eastern religions has quite a different meaning that what it has become in the past 90 years...

Still horribly stupid...but not quite a conspiracy...

Irish defence forces eyed UFOs for 37 years

Pretty cool article...

At some point the US should just let everyone know what it doesn't know.

Unidentified doesn't have to mean alien...it can mean exactly what the definition stands for...

Green eggs and ham!

A child molester is suing the department of corrections for $10MM because he doesn't like his diet!

I think that if it were up to me...child molesters would not need to worry about a diet...

But either way, it's nice to see a judge that has some common sense...

Mattel apologizes to China over recalls

Why are they apologizing to China and not the american people???

This company is a total disappointment to me...I have no trust in a company that does no quality control, pays off people to keep quiet when the toys hurt their children and put profits over their customers.

Have fun with this public relations debacle...

And I'm still not letting china off the hook...they know these are children's toys and there is still lead in the paint!!!!

Any is too much!

MIT coed with fake bomb 'art' arrested

One of our future's "Best and Brightest" goes to an airport wearing a computer circuit board and wiring on her sweatshirt...

What a dope!!!

She'll probably sue and win some money or get some free publicity...I can't imagine that people can be that stupid...but I am always proven wrong

Britney Spears charged with hit-and-run in L.A.

Not really news...but I am starting a new category of posts called "Dumb-Ass Celebrities"

Clinton sees lessons in past failure

I keep hearing that the best indicator of future success/failure is based on past success/failure...

Nuff said.

Manilow sparks political feud with TV show

I know this story is a few days old...but he's a jerk...plus his music sucks!

Anyone that can't talk to someone that has different views is an ignorant Piece of S---!

What a coward.

Hey Barry, if your beliefs are so strong they should be able to hold up to conversation on a "hard hitting" tv show like the View!

Jerk!

DID I SAY YOUR MUSIC SUCKS!

Prosecutors file charges against O.J.

Seven felonies including kidnapping...

I have a question for you lawyers out there....one of the alleged victims of the affair suffered a heart attack after an interview of the "Event"...

If this guy dies and one of the prosecutors can tie the heart attack to the break-in can these guys get charged with murder.

That's what I said!

interesting story

Student arrested, Tasered at Kerry event

Not that I mind anyone picking on Kerry...but this looks like a setup to me.

This kid instigated the whole thing and never shut up...he deserves what he got...

that being said, one of the guards was smiling as he tasered him...that's probably not a standard operating procedure when subduing a person.

when the Fed has to cut this drastically...they are compensating for some bad decisions over the past year...

Not that I mind...I need to refinance!

Dole recalls bagged salads due to E. coli

Another recall...this time not related to China

Chernobyl to be covered in steel

why did this take 21 years?????

Its not like this is new technology...

Russia has been too busy sending flags to the north pole, flying too close to Norway's borders with it's bombers and killing ex spies...

They don't seem to care too much for it's citizens....

Clinton unveils mandatory health care insurance plan

A great quote from Edwards in regards to Clinton's health plan..."I'm glad that, today, the architect of the 1993 plan has another care proposal -- and if imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, then I'm flattered," said Edwards, a former U.S. senator from North Carolina. "The lesson Senator Clinton seems to have learned from her experience with health care is, 'If you can't beat 'em, join 'em.' I learned a very different lesson from decades of fighting powerful interests -- you can never join 'em, you just have to beat 'em."

I can't afford anymore taxes...

Sickening...

Microsoft suffers decisive EU antitrust defeat

I'm not a big fan of Microsoft...but this sounds like protectionism to me.

If Microsoft was a European company this wouldn't be an issue...

might as well compare the EU to Chavez in Venezuela who is "Nationalizing" foreign owned oil companies...

National Play-doh day - September 16th???

Who Knew!!!

too bad I only realized this at 5:00 EST...

Bummer!

Minot Air Force Base Airman Dies on Leave

For those Conspiracy Theorists out there...an interesting coincidence...this 20 year old was involved in the "mishap" a few weeks where nukes were mistakenly flown across the US...

Not too often that 20 year olds die...much less so soon after an incident...

In my opinion...not much here...not too many 20 year olds have access to nukes...at least I hope not!

Can you make too many digital memories?

what a great article...I can remember occasions of being upset that I couldn't get that "great" picture that I totally missed the moment...

well worth the read.

Civil U.S. presidential race not so good for voters

So says the headline...but I don't agree...

people need to learn to get their point across without demeaning opposing points of view...

China cigarette packs to get skull health warnings

along with that there will be pictures of blackened lungs and diseased lungs...

why not put the chemical symbol for Lead (Pb) on the pack...lead will undoubtedly end up in the cigarettes as well as tobacco...no wait...sorry...I take that back...China only dumps lead into toys that are exported from the country...

Bill Belichick and Eric Mangini's childish spat...

A great article by Michael Silver at Yahoo Sports in regards to Slick Willy Belichick and Eric "Mangenius"...both dopes...this article provides the history for the fitting term.

Five must-do's when a loved one is ill

after spending the weekend in the ER for my daughter (who is fine now...) I found this article and think it's a great read...

Another thing that I wold like to add is #6...Take care of yourself...you can't help your loved one if you get sick yourself.

South Korea plans to launch satellite

I think anytime a country expands space exploration is a great thing...

that being said, once a country decides that it is time to build a space station instead of paying for a ride on someone else's rockets...it means that they have something they want to get into space without anyone else knowing what it is...

Police: Man sets off his own booby trap

in an attempt to stop burglars from breaking into his house unobstructed...this dope blew up his own booby trap.

What a jerk...soon...anyone that wants to will be able to break into his house because he won't be home...He'll be in JAIL!!!

that being said, I think the local police need to do some introspection...if someone feels that they have no choice but to set booby traps in their yard to stop thieves...maybe the police aren't doing as well as they should at the "Protect and Serve" piece of their job description!

ROBOT MAKER BUILDS ARTIFICIAL BOY

Yet another great post over at Musings of a Whiskey Rebel.

Cool stuff!

Hopefully they won't be made in China!

Belichick looks to move past spy scandal

I'm sure he is looking to move past this...

He's a cheater!

Who else on his team knew?

is Mangini not complaining because that would make him a hyporcrite?

How many players knew.

At least in this instance Goodell had rules in place to be able to punish the cheater...not like Buddie boy Selig who refused to put rules in place that would call steroid use and HGH a "foul" in baseball.

You will never stop this kind of behavior, but it is how an organization handles it after the fact that fouls their reputation or redeems them in the eye of the consumer.

Kudos to Goodell and his heavy hand!!! At least I can look at my kids and say that if you do something wrong you will have consequences...can't say that about baseball (at least you couldn't until Congress forced them to make rule changes)...which is why I say DOWN WITH SELIG!

Northwest Passage Opens Up

Great news for shipping...bad news for the environment...

Conservative estimates had the nortwest passage opening up due to ice melt anywhere from 2012 to 2080...

No wonder Russia has been getting gung-ho about claiming territory in the arctic circle!!!

Gingrich: Republicans need "clean break" from Bush

I don't know of many other Republicans that can say this and have his/her party listen to them.

I know I have said it and gotten the "Gas Face" quite a few times...

Great article.

Simpson named suspect in casino break-in

he didn't go to jail for "allegedly" killing his wife and her "Friend" but he will go to jail for this.

What a dope...too bad he already had kids...the stupid genes have been added to the pool.

It's such a sad story and keeps getting worse...

Getting Oxygen from a rock...

no real article here...just a thought.

I was watching the science channel ...and the discussion was a "breathtaking" commentary on how to get oxygen from a rock and the difficulty of such...

My first thought was the producers of the show should just interview Hillary Clinton...she can extract every last tax dollar from her constiuents in NY with scientific precision...she can definitely add insight into extracting every last bit out of something...

hehehehehe...I make myself laugh...I guess that is all that matters! RIGHT?????

MUSINGS OF A WHISKEY REBEL: AN ODE TO AMERICA

Posts like this get me through the day and give me hope!

That's why I stop by this blog every chance I get.

Officials: Bush to announce troop cut

it's about time!!!

One thing that REALLY scares me though is the comment that Bush was "rehearsing and polishing" his speach...I had always just assumed that he winged all his speeches because of his endless stupid comments...Nope!!! Not So!!!! He actually planned to say all those stupid things he's said in the past!!!

Woman allegedly shoots cheating husband

why is this woman out on bail???

I understand that he's a ass...but come on!?!?!?!?!?!

She not only shot him, but reloaded the shotgun and shot him again.

What a great storyline this is...classic Sci-Fi...

I can't wait to see it on the big screen...let's hope it's soon!

Test-drive a Nissan, win a lead-laced mug

Apparently China has found a way to dispose of it's industrial waste...

Incorporate it into exports of children's toys and eating utensils...

It's happened so often...can they all be mistakes???

U.S. Jobs Fall for First Time in Four Years

Why is this data a surprise to anyone in the government...it's like looking at your clock at 11:00 at night and being surprised it's dark out!

I could have just added the last 10 companies that announced job cuts just in the mortgage industry and could have come up with 100k losses...and that doesn't include construction, real estate, home improvement etc.

Besides that the unemployment percentage is a farce...the only reason that the percentage stays the same is because when people "Stop" looking they are no longer included in the job.

I'd be interested to see a monthly comparison that includes unemployed people under the standard definition along with people that are on welfare...

CIA chief defends rendition and detention policies

It is a fine line where we are the "Land of the Free" but do things like this without due process.

That being said, I am all for it.

When our own virtues are used against us to kill innocent people...I have no problem getting to the information needed to protect our country

The CIA just better be sure and be able to prove guilt after the fact...

Woman accused of setting fire over keys

Yet another story of a Stupid and Horrible person....

She set fire to her neighbor's house because she thought they stole her keys...only to find her keys in her OWN POCKET after torching the house.

This woman needs a very long punishment

Huckabee vs Paul...

What a great quote by Huckabee during last night's Republican debate...

"If we make a mistake, we make it as one country," said Huckabee to huge roars of applause. "Even if we lose elections we should not lose our honor and that is more important than the Republican party."

Now that is amazing...A politician that "Gets" it...

Norway, Britain monitor Russian bombers

For whatever reason...Russia seems to want to bring things back into the Cold War era...

strangely enough...an article I posted about Fred Thompson last night compared him to Ronald Reagan...

The more things change...the more things stay the same...

This is a great article for getting insight into that...

Protest Greets the Opening of a Muslim School in New York

All I can say about this is GOD BLESS AMERICA!

Only in New York...In the city where the worst Terror attack in our country's history took place does a Muslim public school open...

Two amazing things happened here that won't happen in most other countries in the world...

The right to open up a school that teaches what is currently an "Unpopular" religion due to the terrorism links to radical islam....and the right to protest something that citizens have a problem with...

One problem I do have with this school is that nowhere in the NYC school district is catholic or jewish cultures mandatory courses like Muslim culture is at this school...

Another problem is that this is at taxpayer expense...teaching tolerance of other religions is a great idea and worth every penny...but it shouldn't be on the taxpayer dime unless of course someone can go to school funded by public dollars and say a catholic or hebrew prayer without getting suspended!

Even 40 years later CIA briefings to stay secret

makes perfect sense...we wouldn't want anyone to think that the government lies to us...

MUSINGS OF A WHISKEY REBEL: HOW IS THE TALIBAN GETTING CHINESE WEAPONS?

Great article at Whiskey Rebel...thanks for the great stuff Ginny...

All I can say is BOO-Hiss on China...

This is a dysfunctional team with a dysfunctional owner and a dysfunctional coach...

So sad...

China rejects charge it hacked Pentagon computers

of course they did...

Another China Recall planned by Mattel

I'm all for hammering the Chinese about product recalls...they seem to have found a way to export their contaminated waste materials....by shipping them to the US...

But Mattel should have been sampling the products for quality...as well as every retailer that sold them.

I have no doubt that Mattel overlooked the issue in light of profits and should be ashamed of themselves.

If my daughter had any of these toys and had lead poisoning...I would sue everyone involved in the supply chain...the manufacturer, the wholesaler, the retailer, the shipper and even customs because the product didn't match the shipping notices.

People are horrible and putting our children at risk is one of the worst offenses of all.

BOYCOTT CHINA and now MATTEL as well!!!

Red Sox rookie Buchholz no-hits Orioles

Now...I have to say, one of the teams I like the least in baseball is the Red Sox...but this is pretty cool.

Red Sox rookie Bucholz pitches a no-hitter in only his second start!

A pretty amazing feat...consider all the rookies that have ever pitched...he's only the 17th to pitch a no-hitter as a rookie.

Wife of murderer faces lawsuit

This P-O-S lied to her husband about the neighbor molesting their two year old daughter...

the Father (husband) went to the neighbor and stabbed him to death...

You have to be kidding me??????

People suck.

I bet she was having an affair with the neighbor...he called it off or threatened to expose it.

She won't get in trouble (with the exception of the lawsuit)...will be able to divorce her husband who will be in jail and take everything he has...and she ruined two families.

They should take that kid away from her.

I am disgusted thinking about this!!!

Edwards' wife talks of Clinton 'hatred'

interesting comments by Edward's wife about Hillary...

I totally agree...

I know MANY people that aren't sure who they will vote for, but know exactly who they will vote against.

Russia plans manned Moon mission by 2025

I think this is an important step for a multitude of reasons...

1st...the human race needs this, no matter who it is that gets there.
and 2nd...another "Space Race" will only help drive the US to do what it should have done years ago...

I just don't understand why the US and Russia (among others) don't just expand the lessons learned while working together on the International Space Station into moon colonization...through in China, England, Japan and India and we may be able to get there in 10 years instead of 20

Go Yankees!

Ok...so..now you know...I'm a Yankee fan!

Man loses top of his head in brain operation

SO..he loses the top of his head...replaced by plastic...has constant headaches.

He gets about $4100 in damages because he sued about the plastic replacement.

The court found that the plastic replacement was better than the original and it wasn't causing his headaches...the surgery did!

LOL

Now in america...not only would that have been a $40mm Lawsuit, but I bet the doctors probably could have sued the insurance company because of the mental trauma they had going through a trial!

6th mine borehole offers last hope

I still can't imagine what these families are going through.

I'm not sure where I stand on the situation...do you risk more lives to find the remains of miners? or do you continue in the hope that they are alive? Do the families have a right to know what happened? I find it interesting that the mine owner has made an about face in his approach to the rescue/recovery...is he hiding anything or truly distraught?

There has to be a better way to do things than the way they do...

Foreign airlines fined $300 million

Wow...Huge fines and these don't include ones levied by the UK either.

Math genius wins university place, aged 9

Wow...this kid passed his entrance exams...

I found it interesting that a few schools didn't allow him admittance...but I really think that beyond being a prodigy, this kid needs to be a child first...

He won't get the same social development of other kids his age...but then again...if Hong Kong's public schools are anything like ours...I don't know if he would get a great deal of positive social development with kids his age either...

Game widows grieve ‘lost’ spouses

What a great article.

I say fine...I'm still boycotting Chinese products now...at least as best I can...since everything is made there now.

Time Travel Machine Outlined

yesterday I posted about artificial life...today about time travel...

While the idea is very cool...(I mean who wouldn't want to be able to take their kid back in time to see a T-Rex????)...it's exactly like the artificial life post...

I simply don't trust the scientists (or others) not to exploit the technology...

Rare dead star found near Earth

cool article...

The do say that the dead star is in the earth's neighborhood, but they don't know which street.

they have a relatively large range of distances. Somewhere between 250 and 1000 light years away...

FYI - a light-year is approximately 6.3 Trillion miles

Artificial life likely in 3 to 10 years

As you can tell from many of my posts...I love science and technology...

But this article is scary for so many reasons...

I simply don't trust all scientists to do things for the common good...someone will do something that is either stupic, insane, motivated by greed, because they are forced to or a combination of the above, that will really screw things up for the rest of us...

France offers U.S. symbol with Iraq trip

I'm still not buying French wine...

That is much easier to boycott than Chinese products though...

Which I am doing my best at as well...

Clinton says negatives won't keep her from winning

I just don't know if that is accurate.

While she leads her party for the nomination, in the broader polls though she has a very high negative rating.

Negative is very different than just plain Democrat versus Republican.

Obama may have the better chance to win the general election...Clinton will drive people to vote that normally don't...that isn't good if your negative rating is that high...

We shall see...

Study: Erosion causing lakes' water loss in Lake Huron and Michigan

We just don't know the impact of what we do...

Dredging of the St. Clair river in the 60's has apparently caused water outflows in excess of 2.5 billion gallons a day in the great lakes system.

As a side note, with costs of municipal water around $15 per thousand gallons...that's about $37MM down the drain every day.

Army suicides highest in 26 years

What a sad statistic...and there is no mention of the number of attempts at suicide.

Very disheartening that on top of doing what they are ordered to do in Iraq and Afghanistan...they have to deal with financial issues because they don't get paid enough for what they do...

Hopefully many of them will be on their way home soon.

Fed's Poole says no need for emergency rate cut

This doesn't rule out a rate cut in mid-September...

So if you need a refinance and can wait a few weeks...you may want to sit tight.

I think we will see at minimum a 1/4 point drop in rates, maybe more.

Images, noises offer hope at Utah mine

this has been going on for 10 days now...hopefully something will happen soon to change the status quo.

The poor miners and the poor families...

Can you imagine what it is like for every other miner in the country that has to go underground every morning.

Very brave people...I don't have the courage to do that, and they do it every day!

Toy industry challenged by disposal plan

The lead painted toys that have been recalled by Mattel now pose an environmental problem...

When a majority of the products end up in the landfill the paint will leach off into the ground causing an environmental issue.

It looks like China found a way of disposing of it's waste instead of dumping it into it's own rivers...send it to America!!!

Buried in the article is the fact that laws would allow Mattel to "Re-export" toys that don't pose an environmental risk to another country for resale!!!!

Horrible!

Rumsfeld resigned before election, letter shows

An interesting twist...

While I always thought that GW asked Rumsfeld to resign it appears that this isn't the case.

Some say that by not announcing the resignation before the election more Republican seats were lost...I would agree with that...

What I can say though is it showed some class waiting...One thing that you can say about George Bush is that he is loyal to his friends...

Guard uses Taser on man holding newborn

I couldn't watch the video attached to the article...maybe I should have before I comment...but that is just nuts.

The father obviously lost his cool...but he was contained in the hospital. With no way to exit, there must have been a better way to handle this.

That being said, the guard is an off duty police officer that should have had training for this type of situation that a private security guard may not have...

What a horrible situation for the baby...

Iran Guards 'join US terror list'

This is an interesting move...It will be the first time that a foreign country's Army will be included on the terrorism list.

Not sure what good this does.

Can we add the Pentagon to the list for "losing" 190,000 guns and hundreds of millions of dollars that undoubtedly went to insurgents???

At some point incompetence is just as bad as intention.

Australia holds the world's last great savanna

an interesting article.

While it's not the savanna that I am used to thinking about (lions, tigers and giraffes etc.) it is amazing that 70% of the worlds remaining savanna land mass is in Australia.

China toy group says was aware of problems

China was aware of the problems with the toys that were delivered since MARCH!!!

The article says that there was no comment as to what took so long to do anything about it...

we all know the answer...MONEY.

There are a ton of emails going around that say to boycott gas from Venezuela because of comments from Hugo Chavez...and that is just for comments by some dope...

Why aren't there emails saying to boycott "BROKEN IN CHINA, SHIPPED TO AMERICA"...especially when in regards to the safety of our children?????

Wife who killed preacher set free

She served only 7 months!!!

You have got to be kidding me??????????

How is this possible???

People spitting on the sidewalk have spent more time in jail than this woman.

One thing that was never proved was that her husband abused her...ever...but she did admit to shooting him in the back with a shotgun...

She also stated during the trial that she wiped blood off of his mouth while he was dying and he asked her "Why?"....now I don't know about you, but when I do something wrong...I know it...If I beat my wife, I doubt I would be confused when she got angry!!!!!!

let's get our punishments in line...Murder 7 Months????

"Holy Cow!" Former Yankee Rizzuto dead

today marks the passing of a baseball legend.

While he drove me nuts sometimes when I wanted to know what was going on in the game...his stories were priceless.

What a class act...

And who can forget his role in "Paradise by the Dashboard Lights" by Meatloaf...

Was "Holy Cow!" his signature statement before this song hit the airwaves???

Our Lives, Controlled From Some Guy’s Couch

What a great article!

It is definitely an interesting theory and well worth the read...

Today there are some very popular games where people use simulated characters to do real life things. For example, Lord of the Rings online, World of Warcraft (8million players!!!), the Sims...

People spend real money to buy "fake" money and necessities in these games...

Is it a stretch???

Mattel set to announce second recall

Yet another recall of children's products

This is a similar situation to every Governor in the nation looking at bridge safety AFTER a collapse.

Intact 2,000-year old Etruscan tomb discovered

Another cool article.

Not much is known about the Etruscans other than that they had a civilization that lasted almost as long as the Roman Empire...1000 years.

Lincoln may have had facial defect

The tidbits of information you pick up from articles are really cool.

Hawaii's Big Island on hurricane watch for Flossie

4 Australian lawmakers doubt need to cut gases

Interesting point of view.

I have said a million times that I can have a conversation around how bad global warming is, how much of an impact we are having but I really find it hard to believe that people still think we are not having an impact on the environment.

who knows...

Romney: Iowa Win not hollow

It was a win that was expected, but some of the other finishers really showed well in the more conservative Iowa Straw Poll.

One in particular who made a great showing with much less money was Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee who garnered 18.1% of the vote.

While Romney spent Millions, Huckabee stated that he only spent $100k on the campaign in Iowa.

Amazing results if that is the case!

Gagne blows lead for Boston, Yanks trim deficit to 4 games

Sometimes the best trade is the one you don't make.

At the trading deadline the Yankees had a chance to get this guy...but they passed on giving up some very good future prospects for a "Rental"

I think Boston is still a better team for making the trade, even with the blown save, but the Yankees are also a better team for not making it as well.

Tiger wins PGA, is now 5 shy of Nicklaus

Sometimes I would rather be stuck in traffic than playing bad golf...too frustrating, but it is fun to watch someone that is just THAT GOOD.

He's only 5 shy of Jack Nicklaus for all time in major wins...

Tiger is 4 years (and in his prime) ahead of Nicklaus who was 35 when he won his 13th.

Inspection Finds Debris Penetrated Shuttle’s Tiles

I really don't understand the science behind this issue....thousands of hours of research following Columbia and they still can't keep this from happening...those thousands of hours don't include the original research in the design phase of the shuttles.

Lets see how the repair procedures go...

I really hope this isn't an issue.

I will say this though...I think a few CEOs in America need to feel a little disgrace for their actions.

Word of the day - Sarcasm

sar·casm [sa'ar kazzem ]noun
Definition: cutting language: remarks that mean the opposite of what they seem to say and are intended to mock or deride
[Mid-16th century. Directly or via French< late Latin sarcasmus< Greek sarkazein "tear flesh" < sarx "flesh"]

I think you might see some in the posts today...

I also won't commit to there being a different word tomorrow or the next day either!

China to send 2 giant pandas to Spain

Very cool...

In a sign of warming relations between Spain and China, China agrees to send the two giant pandas to Spain for 10 years.

I just hope they don't get "Recalled" for having too much lead in them!

Energy search goes underground

Essentially, dig a hole 3 miles underground...fill it full of water, the pressure and heat boil the water to 350+ degrees...now take the superheated water out of the ground to produce electricity...

Pentagon loses track of weapons for Iraqi forces

I posted a story about this the other day...

It only gets better.

It's still the same number of 190,000 weapons missing (or in better terms...in the hands of insurgents).

The missing weapons are 54% of the weapons issued to Iraqi forces!!!

In dollar terms at an average of $450/gun (which is very cheap) - that's $85+MM out the window...

and finally...why is the US supplying RUSSIAN MADE AK-47's to Iraq?

Car Bomb headed towards a US naval base in SC

A scary story over at the Further West...

A relatively "quiet" story about a car filled with what may have been explosives heading towards a Naval Base in SC.

Soldier sentenced to 110 years for Iraq murders

Amen to this!

What a horrible story.

Only the ring-leader (Pvt. Steven Green) is left...and unlike the other killers, he will cost the American taxpayer hundreds of thousands if not millions of dollars to prosecute him because he was discharged from the army with a "Personality Disorder"

I would hope that the Military would put into place some methods to keep people with "personality disorders" from carrying a gun...unless of course that is what they are looking for.

Barry Bonds hits 755 to tie Aaron

Well, it is timely that Barry Bonds hits 755 less than 12 hours before the close of my latest poll on Steroids/HGH/Drug use in baseball prior to the rules changes...

a whopping 47% of respondents (in what is FAR from a statistically significant sample) feel that over 50% of players were "Cheating" in some form or fashion. No one said it was less than 10% or over 75%...

That being said, this is what I have to say about Barry Bonds...even if he cheated, he wasn't alone. If greater than 50% of players were doing something to enhance their game, then he was facing "Juiced" pitchers. If that's the case, did he have that great of an advantage? I'm not so sure...he was still that much better!

Does this make me think that Barry isn't a dope? Not a chance. Does this make me feel any better? Not really. I feel more betrayed by Baseball and Bud Selig than I do by Barry Bonds in particular. Baseball needed congressional hearings to move on what everyone knew was wrong...Horrible...Bud Selig is the worst commissioner in any major sport and has been for way too long!!! Horrible Horrible Horrible.

An interesting side note, Bonds hit his 755th off of Clay Hensley who was suspending in 2005 for violating the leauges Minor league steroids policy.

Democrats court liberal bloggers

At a debate that featured 7 of the 8 democratic nominees and questions from a crowd of 1500 bloggers, Clinton took the heat. That is what happens when you are the front-runner...but I don't think she handled herself too well.

Please note my post about Clinton cozying up to Tata consultancy (Clinton Woos...) .

Now sshe steadfastly continued to stick by her decision to take special interest money.

She seems to be ok selling her political soul to get the nomination.

Nuff said about her.

Two great quotes I can agree with from John Edwards: "I just heard some discussion about negotiation, compromise" — rather than overhauling government. He said the nation needs "big change, not small change."

Edwards then called on the field to join him in refusing donations from lobbyists. He suggested that accepting lobbyists' money would make Democrats no better than Republicans.
"We don't want to trade their insiders for ours," he said.

Alex Rodriguez becomes youngest in baseball history to hit 500 home runs

A-rod hits 500 after a 10 day wait.

After doing something that no one has done in 120 years of baseball he was pretty humble about the accomplishment...

A great quote by him: "You wish you could pay each fan back by shaking their hands, but all I could do is hit a home run and win a game," he said. "They wasted a lot of Kodak film on me this week, I'm just glad I was able to pay them back."

I can only imagine what is in store for us when Barry-Humble-is-not-in-my-vocabulary-Bonds finally passes Aaron,

Sector Wrap: Infrastructure Companies

An nice article if you are interested in stocks and investments.

keep in mind that infrastructure includes roads, bridges, water, sewer and more broadly power and utility...

Disclaimer (in case anyone actually values what's written here-hehehehehe) , I don't own any of the stocks listed in the article and I will have to do more research to determine if I agree with the assumptions, but it's a start if you are looking for a place to put money. The recommendations listed in the article are made by the analyst and not by me! hehehehe how was that???

Pakistan criticizes Obama on comments

I'm really not sure how I feel about this article.

There are days when I agree with Obama and other days I think that Pakistan has been a solid ally in the war on terror. (we can discuss the reasons for why they are helping another day...)

Where I think my opinion waivers is in capacity versus capability...they lead to two different points of view.

I personally feel that the government of Pakistan has the capacity to help and is "on-board" with the war on terror. I also feel that they just don't have the capability to do what really needs to be done. This is due to political, financial, technological and other internal pressures that the government is experiencing.

That being said, do they get credit for trying or do we "hammer" them until they relieve those internal pressures that are limiting their effectiveness in the war on terror????

I'm not sure...someone tell me the ramifications of both approaches

McCain changes course on immigration

I think that his about face is a little late.

Has he changed his stance because of a belief change or because of politics?

Is it a good sign that he can change his opinion in a time when many of our politicians are so bull-headed????

McCain got clobbered on this issue and has moved his stance more in alignment with public opinion...I actually think that is good no matter what the reason.

While you elect politicians because of where their views are "Grounded" you want them to be open to new information and new insight....at least I do!

Arkansas couple welcomes 17th child

My wife brought this article to my attention with a simple "OH MY GOD!"

China draws up export blacklist amid health scares

I think that this is a great step. I hope that it has teeth.

I have had regular problems with products from China whether it's the directions not making sense, pieces missing, pieces not fitting together, or having to return CHILDREN'S TOYS because they contain LEAD!

It is very worrisome and quite annoying. I have better things to do than to go back to a store to return crappy products.

Only recently have I started to search for the "Made In..." label and when I have a choice not to buy from China...I do. It's a shame that the whole country is getting heat for a few criminals but if that is what it takes...so be it.

This is the first ever Aztec leader's tomb ever found.

First alarm about bridge over I-35W raised in 1990

As I mentioned yesterday, bridges don't usually collapse without some sign or warning.

A horrible and needless decision.

Court orders man to complete eBay deal

This guy tried to sell a $215k plane on Ebay...he did but for only $128k...his established reserve price.

WHOOOPSY.

Bad job on that one, what makes it worse is he tried to sell it to someone else after the auction went off and tried to cancel the deal.

So...in short, he sold a $215k plane...for about $90k less and then had to pay attorney fees on top of that.

Newfound Planet Has Earth-Like Orbit

Very cool

What a crime...

Katrina victims lose in court on technicalities.

Insurance companies...Horrible, Horrible, Horrible.

More people missing in Bridge Collapse

The death toll stands at 4, but the number of missing people has reached 30.

what a very sad story.

A bridge just doesn't decay over night.

They are built to last 50-100 years, so signs of degradation usually show up much sooner.

All this money going overseas and our very infrastructure is collapsing.

It's a horrible cycle...the money that should have been spent on repairing the bridge will now go to the families as damages for the lives that never should have been lost in the first place.

The sick thing is, is that now the money will be spent on the bridge anyway and the bridge will be repaired. So all that was achieved is 30+ lives lost, hundreds of millions in damages, millions in lawsuits and millions in studies to determine "What went wrong"...all because the State government couldn't put the funding together to fix the bridge in the first place. It probably would have cost a few hundred thousand dollars...a very small percentage of what it will cost now!

Horrible

Chinese go online to torture, kill corrupt officials

An interesting tactic to discuss the evils of corruption.

A local Chinese government has released a game where people can go and kill corrupt officials.

It has been downloaded 100,000 times and has already been sent back to the drawing boards to allow for more users.

I wonder when the first murder case involving this game as a part of the defense will pop up???

Aztec pyramid ruins found in Mexico City

Pretty cool stuff...

Construction workers found the ruins of an Aztec city that was razed by the Spanish Conquistador Hernan Cortes in the 16th century.

The ruins are under Iztapalapa...a crime infested neighborhood in Mexico City.

Very cool.

A side thought...I can see the city government using the find and subsequent exploration of the complex as an "Opportunity" to demolition parts of the neighborhood. Not only to explore the site but to remove crime elements from the city...or at least shift them elsewhere.

Good Morning America's Robin Roberts announces she has breast cancer

Roberts of Good Morning America took some of her own advice while doing a story on co-worker and movie critic Joel Seigel (who died of cancer in June) and did a self examination She found a lump in her breast. A doctor visit followed and she will be heading into surgery.

While this will be a trying time for her, she has a wonderful opportunity to spread the news about the benefits of self examinations, regular doctor visits and early detection.

I wish her well.

Medicare plan increases use of costly drugs

Interesting article, but not really surprising.

Essentially the Medicare Part D drug benefit was to provide drug coverage to a segment of the population that didn't have it (or acceptable coverage) beforehand...

I wonder if the study shows there was increase in drug utilization (meaning more people used a drug more often than before) or if there was increased cost per prescription (meaning people shifted from a lower cost drug to a higher cost drug while still using the same amount/type of drug)...

This will take years to sort out the ramifications of this legislation...

F-14 parts sold despite sales ban

Horrible...the only country in the world that still flies the F-14 is Iran...

I highly doubt that anyone else is trying to buy these parts.

As frustrating as this article is, at least there seems to be some hope that this stuff won't happen anymore or at least as often.

Just plain stupid...yet again.

US cannot account for 190,000 guns in Iraq: report

This is the type of news that makes me wonder if we shouldn't just take our toys and come home.

These weapons and body armor are being used by our enemies by now...that along with the hundreds of millions of dollars stolen from a Iraqi bank a few short weeks ago means that our own government has funded terrorism more than any other organization in the world.

This is just plain stupid!

What a great story...

Essentially a brain "Pacemaker" is implanted in the chest to provide stimulation to parts of the brain.

Very cool and very promising to a part of the population most people (except for their families) forget about.

Cool stuff!

Clinton woos the outsourcers feared by U.S. workers

Great article about Clinton's alignment with Tata Consultancy Services...this is an organization that primarily helps organizations outsource their workforce overseas.

An interesting gamble for the NY Democrat that says she is a fighter for the American Worker...

Why people have sex: It feels good

News Flash!
amazing!
Brilliant!
Astounding!

I wonder how much government funding it took to find this out!

I was however disgusted to find that one of 237 reasons to have sex was to give someone a sexually transmitted disease!!!

Obama might send troops into Pakistan

an interesting statement and one that shouldn't be taken out of context.

I think the entire article needs to be read...

He has a plan, that is for sure and he seems to be able to deliver the message in ways that are resonating with people.

Culpepper signs with Raiders while No. 1 pick Russell remains unsigned

an interesting move by the Raider's front office.

I think it says more about the contract negotiations with JaMarcus Russell than it says about anything else.

Culpepper can be a huge help to this team, even though it already has two other potential starters to carry the torch until Russell finally gets signed.

Glavine fails in bid to win No. 300

there is an interesting headline!

Glavine didn't fail!

He left the game with a 2 hitter and his bullpen blew it!

This is an accomplishment by a person I can root for!

He's a class act and most likely one of the last players in a LONG time to pass the 300 win milestone.

No one is even close

US border fences 'an eco-danger'

so says the Mexican government...

There can be no meaningful conversation about immigration if there is no control of the borders.

I'm sorry but in this case I feel the environment just has to suffer a little.

If Mexico is so concerned about the impacts, why not patrol it's border and do something (anything actually) to curb border jumping.

O.J. criticizes Goldman family over book

what a sad, sad, sad story...

this is a weird world when this stuff goes on.

Simply put, why would anyone want to buy it???

It's a sad statement of our society.

Google wary of behavioral targeting in online ads

I think this is great news!

I don't think Yahoo has the same concerns...

Batman the Dark Knight - teaser trailer

Click the link and leave on your volume, because there is not much to see, but hey, it is a year off!

Also the Warner Brother's site is up: http://thedarkknight.warnerbros.com/

It only posts the logo and when you click the screen you get a campaign add for Harvey Dent.

Very cool

Oscar the "Death Cat" - Cat predicts deaths in nursing home

I know this story is a couple of days old but it's a great story.

Also note a post I made on July 14

http://tenminutemisconduct.blogspot.com/2007/07/new-breath-test-detects-lung-cancer.html

I mentioned that dogs do something similar...

I think it should be explored more scientifically...I know it's out of the norm but why not?

Whoopsy! Swiss teens caught with cocaine disguised as wine

Funny stuff!

These kids are STUPID.

I guess that is why they are drug smugglers.

8KG of cocaine smuggled in 11 bottles of wine...one broke...WHOOOOPSY

The smell of the cocaine alerted the customs officials.

Can anyone tell me what cocaine smells like?

But please don't label me a tree-hugging hippie!!!

I still drive my gas guzzling SUV, but this is a great story!

Yet another Gulf Coast "Dead Zone"

Well, this seems to be a recurring theme...

the more I read about this, the more I find it amazing how science fiction becomes science fact...

when I was "Younger" (I won't tell you how young or how old) I read a book called "Last Gasp" by Trevor Hoyle.

It took me a while to find it...Barnes and Noble didn't even have it listed but Amazon did

http://www.amazon.com/Last-Gasp-Trevor-Hoyle/dp/B000BP77SW/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2/102-3516042-5495302?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1185926030&sr=8-2

It was a pretty good book...can't tell you it was great, but after all these years I did remember it, even if Barnes and Noble didn't, so that has to say a lot...

Basically it was an apocolyptic end of the world type book based on the expansion of these "Dead Zones".

Like I said, it's amazing that a book written in 1983 has the basic premise (excluding the rest of the plot!!!) of the book coming true almost 25 years later...

Retired general censured in Tillman case

So he's censured...so damn what!!!

Unless he loses rank he still retires a general and get's to sit on his pension!!!

While I agree there was no attempt at a cover-up by the military/pentagon as a whole...Army Secretary Geren who conducted the investigation stated very clearly that Lt. Gen. Philip Kensinger LIED to investigators to protect himself. That sounds like a cover-up to me even if it is on a personal level!!!!

If he isn't demoted than the investigation was a sham!

I'm sick and tired of the only people that get punished these days are the ones that stand up and say "I screwed up"...the one's that hide things get the time to protect themselves from any real punishment...

Very upsetting...Nuff Said!

Giuliani offers health care plan, also mentions tort reforms

An interesting strategy...actually pretty simple strategy to deal with health care costs.

As with any simple plan it doesn't answer too many questions, but it may allow for an easy discussion for forward movement.

I still think there would have to be some short to intermediate term support for lower income families...

but who knows...there isn't much you can really get from a 1 page article.

I do however like the fact that he wants to target tort reform!

Great article about Thompson for President...or not

worth the read.

Meditators predict Dow 17,000, near U.S. utopia

What a great idea!

"Through group transcendental meditation the assembly -- which has 1,800 people meditating daily in Iowa ,releases harmonious waves which benefit all aspects of U.S. life, spokesman Bob Roth told Reuters"

"And the group's leader, John Hagelin, said when that number reaches 2,500 within the next 12 months, America will see a major drop in crime and the virtual elimination of all major social and political woes."

They may be a little off their rocker but if it works great! If not there are 1800 people feeling good about themselves.

Either way, it's a success!

Dinosaur discussions

well, I have had one of the best conversations ever today...sitting on the deck...having a cup of coffee (at my new table by the way) and discussing dinosaurs with my son Christopher...

We discussed the following
-The longest dinosaur ever...Seismosaurus
-The tallest...Ultrasaurus
-The smallest...and no...it isn't the compsognathus like one website I found said...Christopher clued me in on the FACT that it's the microceratops which was less than 2 feet tall which is half the size as the compsognathus. How a 4 year old that can't read remembers this stuff is AMAZING to me.
-His favorite is "All of them" and
-He wants to be a paleontologist when he grows up as well!

Great stuff...What a way to start the day!

Would-be shoe-bomber has no regrets

I would think that he has two regrets...

the first is that he's such dope and that he failed miserably on his mission and second I would think he should be regretting his mug shot (see attached).

Lord of the Rings Online - Shadows of Angmar and S of A World Companion

Speaking of games.

I have attached a link to two books written by another friend of mine that are reference manuals to the Lord of the Rings - Shadows of Angmar MMO.

If there was ever an online game you should try, it's this one and these books are a huge help!

The content is amazing and I really enjoy the game play when I get the chance to log on...

Here comes Castle Whiterock!

For all of you old enough to remember and geeky enough to have played rpg's my friend Ken has just finished editing a ginormous (his words) masterpiece of modules...check out his blog for more details and feel free to add on to my comments requesting free copies for all his friends!!!!

That being said, it is hard to beat them up based on the offseason moves they already made this summer.

Bloomberg's closet...

Michael Bloomberg, Mayor of NY, has a few skeletons...as do most people.

Many of them have proven to be non-issues in his local elections but with rumors of a run for presidency...who knows how they will be looked at across the country.

I think however his biggest "skeleton" in the closet is that he left the Republican Party and became an independent...that may have the biggest impact of all.

Although, as an independent, he may be able to get more traction that Ross Perot and Ralph Nader...

Interesting article on the enviromental "Costs" of green energy

Interesting article, and it does provide some interesting insights.

Simply put, I would have a little concern with the report as it seems to be pretty close minded...

It is very easy to "adjust the math" to get a result that you are looking for.

The first thing I thought of when reading the article was that the study was funded by the Nuclear Power industry

"Flying Wing" takes flight in California

A new and experimental plane that looks like a flying wing has begun live flight testing.

The X-48B has it's engines high up on the fuselage instead of under the wings which should make the plane quieter to passengers and those on the ground during takeoff.

It should also provide greater fuel efficiency because of it's shape and more capacity for passengers.

A top Quote of the Century - Bob Costas ZINGS Barry Bonds

In short Barry called Costas, "little midget man who knows (nothing) about baseball."

Costas responded, "As anyone can plainly see, I'm 5-6 1/2 and a strapping 150, and unlike some people, I came by all of it naturally"

BRILLIANT!!!

"New" tape of Bin Laden using old clips

Is he dead or alive?

Is he inaccessible because of health or security reasons.

Some interesting quotes buried in the article...

"It does not matter if bin Laden is dead, alive, sick or captured ... Al Qaeda now is an ideology not a hierarchy. It takes someone like bin Laden to create it but any of his aides can run it now," an Arab diplomat said.

"His death or capture might be a blow to the organization but it is the ideology that needs to be fought, not the person."

More US Russian tension on the horizon???

A great article about a Russian expedition to the North Pole...cool in itself, but buried at the bottom of the article is a quick hit on US/Russian tensions...

It's about Russia claiming more waters off it's north cost and the US opposition to such tactics...

Maybe I am reading too much into this but in the relatively near future the Arctic circle will be a huge focus for international tension. As the ice caps melt (initially for part of the year and then for the entire year) there will be more and more competition to gain control of a viable "East/West" passage that would cut weeks off of shipping times from China to Europe and the East coast of the US.

yet another instance of tension with Russia...also see my post about troop reductions in Europe if you haven't read it yet.

Curt Schilling calls out Bonds and Mcgwire

On the baseball diamond this guy is a competitor.

I admire his approach to the game...

but boy does he yap a lot...

I see lots of his points but is it his place to say anything???

Simply put, if anyone is going to say anything it should be Bud Selig...and he is proven he is a waffler in the grandest sense.

Study: Obesity is Socially Contagious

The article says that when the scale tips to "obese" for one person, their friends have a 50% increased chance of becoming obese themselves.

I know it is true at our house...we tend to cook tons when our friends come over

Oh, btw it also says the opposite is true too!!!

Sorry for the slow down...

Well, I am sorry for the slowdown in posts today...

We had such a HORRIBLE Experience with Fortunoffs in regards to our patio furniture...

It's a long story for another day but in short, we returned EVERYTHING and have decided NEVER to visit that store again...

So, now it is the middle of the summer and we don't have any furniture for our nice new deck...

To solve that problem...today was BUILDING DAY!

I built a base for a table...I am very proud of it but I have to put the top on and actually figure out how to get it up on to the deck...it's about 400 lbs...

Pictures will follow when I am done ...if it looks good.

hehehehe

European Heatwave

well, I had another conversation the other day where a friend said that global warming didn't exist...

As you can imagine, I was a little surprised by this comment.

I'm open to discussing how bad, what impacts humans are having, trending of natural events etc. but I can't sit and discuss that there just isn't anything happening...

What I think would really help move the discussion of environmental issues forward is to essentially stop using the term "Global Warming" (it's politicized and is almost as touchy a subject as religion and abortion) and start discussing the topic in terms of how much it will cost people in the future.

Simply put, if you are a "Non-Believer" and some says global warming...you tend to hear "Global Warming...blah...blah...blah" However, if someone were to say that rising temperatures will cost you $400/year in extra cooling costs for your house, the frozen corn you put on your table will now cost $6/lb, Milk will cost $8/gal and orange juice...just forget about it...you may be more interested in the conversation.

29000 names deleted by Myspace - Sex Offenders

First of all...that number is astounding!!!!

Second of all...why did it take legal action to get Myspace to do this???

Tobacco may be put under FDA control

I wonder how this will really help get people to quit smoking, but it's an interesting approach.

Besides that, I wonder where the opposition comes from.

An industry that kills approximately 400k people a year really should be regulated a little bit more than saying they can't advertise to minors...wouldn't you think???

Please don't take this as support for the FDA...

Bud Selig to TRY to attend Bonds record breaking homerun

Well I am glad that the Commissioner of Baseball has finally made up his mind to do what should have never been in doubt.

One of, if not the most important baseball record is about to be broken and he is casting a shadow on it. At least a bigger shadow than is already there...

Either show up or not. Be clear. Be concise. Don't waffle on the topic. If you (and I mean Bud Selig) think that Barry is guilty than HAMMER HIM and send him home like the NFL has done to Vick. If not shut your mouth and go to the game...clap like mad and hand him his plaque.

either way, it may not be an issue. The only legitimate reason that Selig should miss this weekend's game is going on...the Hall of Fame induction

The Seven Daughters of Eve - Bryan Sykes

For those of you interested in geneology...here is a great book.

Very informative...without putting you asleep or bogging you down in the science of our genetic roots...

At the end of the "lesson" is a great section of fiction based on his findings...Sykes prepares a quick storyline as a description of when and where 95% of Europe's genepool comes from.

great job and well worth the read.

Rev. Sharpton backs idea on rap lyrics

I don't always agree with Sharpton's tactics...but he may be on target with this one...

Lester to start for Red Sox on Monday

While I am a Yankee fan and the Yanks are in desperate need of a few wins and corresponding losses by the Red Sox, tomorrow may be a day that I root for the Sox.

I know...I know...many of you may find this hard to believe, but this is a "Feel Good Story" and the lord knows I want to feel good.

Jon Lester is set to return to the mound for the Red Sox on Monday, nearly a year after his rookie season was cut short when he was diagnosed with cancer.

update 9:35pm 7/23
Lester just left the game after 6 innings (Sox leading 5-2) stats:
2 ER, 6k, 1hr and 96 pitches...great job.

V for Vendetta

Synopsis - A shadowy freedom fighter known only as "V" uses terrorist tactics to fight against his totalitarian society.

What a great movie.

It is interesting though that the "hero" of the film is a terrorist.

"One man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter"

I wonder what form this film would have taken before 9/11 and what differentiates the terrorist from the freedom fighter????

Smith believes investigators are using Vick to get at others

a very interesting article.

One that I was initially disappointed in when I saw the headline.

Why would a NFL Hall-of-Famer expose himself to the backlash of defending Vick?!?!?!

Who knows, but Smith makes a few good points at the end of the article so it's worth the read.

David Beckham's impact on US Soccer (or Futbol)

while he might not play in the first game with his new team...he already has had an impact.

ESPN has basically set aside the night to televise a show about Beckham and the game.

I don't remember ever seeing a Soccer game on ESPN before...

Shawshank Redemption

I'm watching it now...What a great movie...nuff said.

One Laptop per child - Part I

I know the story is old, but a few weeks ago, I read an article about a Nigerian school without electrical power getting a donation of 300 laptops. As you can imagine, I was amazed that better planning wasn't put into this...but I guess I shouldn't have been surprised...

One Laptop per child - Part II

As a follow up to my prior post...it appears the bad planning of sending laptops to a school without electricity has actually been shown to be worse.

The dopes forgot to put internet "Filters" on the computers to keep the kids from browsing PORN!!!

Just plain stupid on a multitude of levels!

From Wales, a box to make biofuel from car fumes

Three fishing buddies say they have developed a box which can be fixed underneath a car in place of the exhaust to trap the greenhouse gases blamed for global warming -- including carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide -- and emit mostly water vapor.

Exciting claim!

Does it work?

Who knows?!?!?!

In a twist of intrigue, after every demonstration the three friends split the components up in pieces and put them in hiding, with each person knowing only their piece of the pie...

No one else has seen has ever seen the inside of the box...

Teen Girls Accused Of Setting Kitten Ablaze

People are horrible sometimes and it's really scary when they are horrible as kids!

Most people get worse as they get older.

I hope they get the three years

Great exchange of comments at The Further West

A great exchange over at the Further West in regards to a "discussion" between Jim Webb and Lindsay Graham about the path of the Iraq war.

Well worth the read as are the other posts on the blog.

Viking treasure hoard uncovered

A father and son using metal detectors found a treasure "hoard" dating back to the 10th century.

Pretty amazing to find so much and intact.

A side note...the father and son will split the proceeds with the landowner if you are concerned about things like that...

Baseball Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn To Appear On Wheaties Box

I just saw Baseball Hall-of-Famer Tony Gwynn on ESPN First Take.

What a class act.

If there was ever a sports figure you want your kids to look up to...he's it.

As for the Wheaties box...WHAT TOOK SO LONG????

Basic Science Fiction Library

If you are a fan of science fiction this is a GREAT list of classic science fiction books and authors put together by James Gunn.

When you aren't sure what to read next...here is a great resource!

Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (1980)

What a great movie.

I can't wait to watch it with my kids when they get older.

7 kids removed from squalid Texas home

Dirty diapers 4ft high in closets!!!

Not much else to say here besides people are horrible.

Sometimes it amazes me that you need a license to get married, but not to have kids after you get married.

Eat a steak, warm the planet

A kilogram (2.2 pounds) of beef causes more greenhouse-gas and other pollution than driving for three hours while leaving all the lights on back home, according to a Japanese study.

I have to tell you...if I can't eat a 2lb steak every once in a while, I may get a little bit crabbier!!!

Star Trek - Episode 14 "Balance of Terror" (1966)

Another bout of insomnia last night had me listening to a live feed of the World Series of Poker and watching my favorite episode of the original Star Trek series "Balance of Terror"

Essentially it is submarines in space, but it was my favorite show.

If you ever see it on, I suggest watching!!!

Unless of course, Bridges of Madison County is more your style! hehehehehe

'Sweet herb' (Stevia) may be green gold for Paraguay

The herb Stevia (why bother with the full Latin name????) is native to Paraguay and may be the future of competition for sugar.

It is a natural herb that has a long list of beneficial properties, being an anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory and an anti-bacterial agent useful in the battle against diabetes, high blood pressure and tooth decay. On top of that it's 300 times sweeter than sugar and NO CALORIES!!!

That being said, of course the FDA has restricted it's use in the US.

Only drugs that cause heart-attacks are approved by the agency that is swayed by lobbyists and industry paid consultants...in this case the sugar industry. (Sorry about that little bit of anger tinged commentary...)

Doctors, Democrats scrutinize September 11 dust

Doctors and Democrats are reviewing the impacts of this environmental disaster.

It still looks like there is more fall out to follow, and that will be political in nature.

The finger pointing has already started and the lightning rod seems to be firmly in the hands of Christie Whitman (Ex-Gov. of NJ and Environment Secretary of the EPA).

Earlier this year, a federal judge ruled that Whitman knowingly LIED to New York residents about their health risks. The case is now under appeal

NEW POLL: What percentage of baseball players were taking steriods, HGH or other enhancing drugs (like amphetamines) before the rules changes instituted by MLB?

Which would you prefer?
